Art, packed

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

Got the giant padded art box on Thursday, so I sent this piece out to the Taos Gallery, The big box contained a piece of perforated foam - you mark the corners of your art and then rip out the foam inside the perimeter so you have a little cradle for your piece. This would have been more satisfying if the foam had been perforated all the way through. As it was I had to use my knife, which is almost never a bad thing.

I bought the big (35×42x5″) spendy box for this piece because I was nervous about shipping my biggest artwork, and moreover having it shipped back to me after the show was over. Overall I’m pleased - it was pretty easy to pack, very sturdy, and I think will protect the work well. I’ll probably use it to store the piece after, assuming it does not get sold.

Shlepped it to the UPS store, along with a smaller piece that’s going to Lexington, KY, for which I already had a proper box. The lady who assisted me was extremely nice and very thorough. Now both works are on their way to their destinations, and I have tracking numbers and a load off my mind.

More Juried Shows

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

I don’t think I mentioned that last week I got a piece accepted to a juried exhibition at The Taos Gallery, in…Taos, New Mexico. Of course, it’s the biggest piece I’ve painted so far, a 24×36″ cradled panel. It has to be shipped by the end of the month. I ordered a special padded, reinforced art box to ship it in; I hope it arrives soon, so I have time to send the piece ground. (It’s sort of funny to be waiting for a box to ship so that I can put art in it and turn around and ship it somewhere else, but there you have it.)

This show carries the possibility of awards and gallery representation, which is why I applied. I’m half considering a roadtrip there during or after the show, which runs March 6 to May 8. Ever been to Taos?

Progress

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Now that I’ve completed a batch of butterfly paintings and boxes (which I still need to put on my Etsy site), I’ve been working on my bigger paintings. I completed the pattern for this one (as yet untitled), which is 16″x16″, and I’ve started on two new panels.

One of the new paintings is 30″x30″ - the biggest painting I will ever have done! Today I started working on the background color. It’s got streaky beige, white, red, and bronze, with warm underpainting, and so far it’s been a joy to paint. I also put the pattern for it onto tracing paper, which being so large was rather arduous. My shoulder definitely got a workout today. I’ve been planning this painting for months now, so it’s terribly exciting to actually be making it.

The other is 12″x36″, kind of an odd size for me. I am not sure what sort of pattern I’ll be putting on that one yet but I have ideas about the object. I just put the first layer of background color down today; it’s got a long way to go, but it’s lovely to think about what it could become.

Camberwell Beauty Box

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

I think this is the favorite of the five boxes I’m doing for this trunk show. Today I varnish the tops and attach the hinges. Hinges are the worst part, as they are tricky and if I mess them up, I’ve screwed up the whole thing with all the work I’ve done. So here’s hoping.

Boxathon

I’ve been working like crazy this week on a series of new Butterfly boxes for this event:

This Saturday, at the DWR studio, I’ll be featuring lots of original Butterfly paintings, most of which I haven’t yet posted on Etsy, and several brand-new Butterfly boxes. Come enjoy breakfast snacks and mimosas as you browse my work, and that of my Secession cohorts and several other local designers and artists.
